Lab Automation Module

As a part of my senior year at Columbia University, I am leading a team of 5 engineers with the end goal of making a module to automate lab procedures. The particular procedure we have chosen to target is the capping/decapping of large format vials. After my time at UPSIDE Foods, I saw the potential benefits that lab automation modules could provide for all fields of experimental research as well as my talent for designing these exact modules.

After speaking with experts in the field, we learned that almost all industries that concern themselves with life sciences or cell cultivation are in need of an automated method of manipulating larger format (50ml) vials. Presently we are expecting to have a fully functioning design by May of 2023 and are exploring ways to make the design commercially available.

We aspire to set the standard for the future of lab automation by being the first module to be:

  • Fully automated (without the need for any operator whatsoever).

  • Affordable and accessible to smaller markets.

  • Universal and easy to integrate into any present and past automation system.

  • Modular.

  • Easy to learn (with prepackaged software and familiar mechanisms).

  • Stackable.
