4-Point Collinear Probe

During the summer of 2021, a professor of my college tasked myself and another student to research, design, and construct a 4-point collinear probe for resistivity measurements. This project had us exploring advanced electrical engineering techniques and using that knowledge to fabricate an accurate and cost-efficient instrument.

We had to engineer and design compact faraday cages to limit electrical noise, program algorithms to average out values and ignore anomalies, and design an intuitive UI that would provide resistivity data vs time in order to achieve the most accurate measurements possible.

Skills learned/improved by the end of the placement:

  • Rapid prototyping

  • 3D product design (using Autodesk Inventor)

  • Hands-on manufacturing in a workshop

  • Programming instruments using LabVIEW

  • LaTeX coding

  • Electrical safety (from working with kilovolt and 10 amp ranges)

  • Signal analysis

  • Presenting findings/project and public speaking
